Animals behind the phisical barrier
Usually, when we see a dog and a cat, the red light turns on automatically. We expect the dog to be aggressive towards the cat. That is the natural behavior of these two types of animals. That's also the behavior I saw in my backyard when my dogs saw a cat. So it's a reason why my observation shocked me.
For a few months now I have had a new member of my family: it's a domestic cat. When we let dogs met the cat (through the window at first) they didn't react aggressively. It didn't happen even when we let them met face to face. They have shown more interest than hostility. I think that it is because they met each other in stages and they had time to get used to one another. It made me realize that maybe physical barriers can stop an animal's instincts. It makes them calm down and behave manageably.
Or maybe it was clear for the dogs that this was your cat, not a stranger, and it should be treated as a family member?
